Tennessee US Rep. wants fentanyl traffickers to spend life in prison

WASHINGTON (WZTV) — A U.S. lawmaker from Tennessee wants fentanyl drug traffickers to spend life behind bars for certain offenses.

Republican Tennessee U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett is the sponsor of H.R. 6493, a bill which amends the Controlled Substances Act to allow for life imprisonment for certain offenses involving the deadly drug fentanyl.

The bill would create a punishment of life in prison for persons convicted of intentionally trafficking fentanyl or fentanyl analogues. Specifically, the bill states, “In the case of a violation of subsection (a) of this section involving 400 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of N-phenyl-N-[1–(2-phenylethyl)–4-piperidinyl] propanamide or 100 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of any analogue of N-phenyl-N-[1–(2-phenylethyl)–4-piperidinyl] propanamide, such person shall be sentenced to imprisonment for life.”
